A fire broke out Friday in an olefins unit at Shell’s Deer Park, Texas, chemical plant, where at least five contractors reportedly have been taken to the hospital.
“We are currently experiencing a fire within one of our units,” Shell (NYSE:SHEL) posted on the Community Awareness Emergency Response Line. “The incident is being handled within the boundaries of this facility and there is no threat to the community form this incident.”
The mayor of Deer Park told local TV station ABC13 that the incident was an oil and gas fire from a leak.
Officials reportedly said there is no shelter in place since the wind blowing away from the city, but air monitoring is being conducted in the area.
Response in the Gulf Coast refined spot market had not materialized by early Friday evening, after spot prices closed with strong gains before the fire was reported.
